Spring Update!

Happy Spring! Yes, I’m still very much alive and well. Things have been slow around the blog because I took the winter months to enjoy my new baby nephew, all things holidays, and getting business things organized and ready for an awesome 2014 year! Since January, I’ve attended two amazing photography workshops that left me feeling inspired, learned, and happy. Am I the only one who feels like I’ve blinked and we are now in the middle of Spring? One of my big New Years resolutions was a better balance of work and personal life, the blog was starting to feel abandoned, so I’m excited to share what I’ve been up to and posts that are to come! In addition to the photography workshops, Eric and I traveled to Europe with friends and family last Autumn and it was such a wonderful experience. Yes, I’m definitely someone who enjoys the comfort of “home”, but there is no doubt about it, I love all things traveling and seeing the world. I feel so inspired, alive, and “content” traveling. Sure, being in countries where you can’t understand the language can feel confusing, but I feel like that’s part of the adventure. It’s also nice having a husband who is good with maps – I could see myself getting very (very) lost without him (those canals in Venice all look the same!) I’m already researching and dreaming of the next place I want to explore. We got to travel and see 9 different cities/countries and I am so excited to share my travel adventures through pictures. So so much more soon, for now, here’s a glimpse of what I’ve been up to! xo

Mary Paige ~ The Dairy Barn Bridal Portraits

I’ve been waiting to be able to post these for a few weeks! Having to keep bridals like these hidden until after the wedding sure is difficult - I couldn’t wait to share how stunning Mary Paige is! We met at The Dairy Barn in Fort Mill which was the perfect backdrop and location for her spring time bridal portraits. I really enjoyed getting to know her Mom and sister at the session as well! I can’t WAIT to show you all the gorgeousness from their sweet southern wedding, but until then, enjoy just a few of the many gorgeous images we took that day! These were hard to narrow down! xoxo

Jill ~ Portraits of a Friend

I love how life simply works in mysterious and awesome ways. I met Jill when I was a “little” first year grad student when we lived in Virginia Beach. Even though Jill was already in her third year, we quickly became friends and have become even closer throughout the years. I owe most of my educational sanity to this girl and appreciate her advice and friendship more than I can describe. She was one of the first people I told about my career ventures into photography, and Jill was always a source of strength and encouragement. It’s not every day one decides to change their “life path” – and she continues to not only believe in my dreams, but gets excited about them as if they were her own. As life would have it, we both ended up 30 minutes away from each other in the Carolina’s. Not only do I have my sister’s living close by (YaY!), but I’ve been also blessed with great friends that have moved around these parts as well (seriously how lucky is that!) Jill has always had a passion for the arts (and photography) and wants to begin learning how to shoot in Manual mode! (I LOVE teaching!) Since the weather here has been all things Spring and pretty, we went on some adventures around the area shooting just for the love of photography. I’ve had the Canon 5D Mark iii for awhile now, but never played with the double exposure feature. So you will see a few of those that we had fun trying out! Kathleen ~ Duke Mansion Bridals

YaY I can FINALLY share these!! (Seriously, not showing a sneak peek for a session you’re SO excited about is difficult stuff!) We had to reschedule earlier in the month due to the looming gray clouds that opened up to pouring rain. The day of our session was almost made for us and the “feel” we wanted for the images. Even though we were in the middle of December, we just so happened to get a beautiful 55-60 degree day filled with blue skies and a glorious glowing sun. Kathleen brings such a calm and is simply the sweetest (she is going to make a great dentist!) Since Kathleen is getting married at the Duke Mansion, we decided it would be the perfect backdrop for her bridal portrait session. Here are a few from the MANY beautiful images we captured a week before her wedding! Oh and a surprise sneak peak is at the bottom of the post! Enjoy! xoxo

Maddie ~ Senior Portraits

I love doing senior sessions. Senior year is SUCH an exciting time in high school – it’s especially a time for dreaming up the possibilities of the future. I love getting to know the seniors during the session – what they are involved in (any sports or clubs), where they hope to be next year, and any wishes for what their futures might hold. We talk about our favorite TV shows, school dances, life at home, pets, … really, the conversations could be endless. I want the parents, family & friends, and of course the senior to look back and remember life for exactly how it was. I love forming a friendship with both the senior & family so that years from now, I can congratulate them as they achieve their dreams. I am in awe that Maddie and her Mother FLEW from PA the morning of the photo shoot and flew back that night. You would never be able to tell that Maddie got up at 3am that morning! Gosh I could say so much — Maddie is one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met. She has such a BRIGHT future ahead of her and has already been so dedicated/hardworking in both school and extra curricular activities. There is no doubt in my mind that she’ll move mountains. Have a beautiful rest of your senior year — it’s going to go FAST so enjoy every second of it. Oh and did I mention that she is simply GORGEOUS? This post would have been pages long with how many I initially wanted to show! It was such a pleasure to spend time with you that Wednesday afternoon Maddie!! Aislinn ~ Hudson Ohio Senior Photographer

Happy Sunday everyone! As much as I would have liked to say I enjoyed that extra hour of sleep that daylight savings brought, I think I woke up way earlier than I would have before the switch! It’s been a relaxing, productive, and super cozy Sunday, so I won’t complain! Before I head off to an engagement session this afternoon (YaY!) I wanted to share some of my favorites of the senior session I did with Aislinn while I was in Hudson, Ohio last month! Gosh I feel like I get SO lucky with such wonderful people I get to meet and photograph. Aislinn is such a super sweet, kind, and passionate girl. She is SO excited for all the adventures of college next year! And a huge huge applause to Aislinn as she has been getting accepted to all her top picks for college! You go girl !! Can you believe she kept saying she was nervous throughout the session? You rocked it ! I loved loved loved this session and it was the most PERFECT fall day! The colors made me squeal with happiness!! Thank you Aislinn for being so awesome to photograph and putting up with the WIND that day! You are beautiful on the inside & out and I hope you enjoy the rest of your senior year at Hudson! Keep smiling and I wish you all the best when you start COLLEGE in the fall! Hailey ~ Charlotte Senior Portraits

Hailey and I traveled to the fields and farms of Weddington North Carolina for her Senior Portraits! Even though we are rounding the end of the summer, we couldn’t catch a break with the summer heat! She still looks cool, calm, and collected though! I don’t think I could ever look this gorgeous in 90 degree heat. Nope, not a chance. We took a few breathers in the air conditioning of my car and stopped at a few locations we would point out on our drive. Thank you Hailey for being so kind and adventurous with all my crazy ideas! She just started her senior year at Fort Mill High School a few weeks ago, so best wishes for an amazing senior year! Hailey is such a sweetheart and was so easy to photograph! It was really hard to choose my favorites for this blog post! You go girl – keep shining bright! xoxo Enjoy!

Mark ~ Charlotte Senior Portraits

Fall must be in the air. You know why? Mark officially started his senior year this past week! (congrats!!!) And I also found out that Starbucks is bringing back the pumpkin spiced latte September 5th, … whoohoo fall ! For those of you that know me, it’s totally my favorite season of the ENTIRE year. Sorry to get sidetracked there lol. Anywayyyyy, Mark and I ventured out into Old Town Fort Mill (South Carolina) to shoot his senior portraits. He’s a total natural in front of the camera (I mean SERIOUSLY!) — if the sun hadn’t disappeared, we would have shot for hours! He has such an easy going/kind demeanor and we had lots of laughs as he liked to strike random funny faces throughout the session! What’s really fun is that Mark is super interested in photography (well, videography to be exact) – but he has a good understanding of camera functions, light, and lenses. It was nice to talk all about the field and his future – he’s definitely going places!!! Mark, I super enjoyed our session and your family is the sweetest ever. Really. Thank you for always making me feel like part of the family! Cheers to a wonderful last year of high school and may you always chase your dreams (and make them a reality!) I had a really hard time narrowing these down – I told ya he was a natural in front of the camera — enjoy!!

Feeling Inspired & Mark III Fun

Last week, on a spontaneous whim, Megan (Lime Green Photography) and I decided it would be fun to play with the 5D Mark iii she rented for the weekend. Within a few hours time, we had some willing “models” (i.e. friends and siblings) and set out while the the sun was setting. The 5D mark iii really IS all the hype it’s getting. Lets just say this baby will hopefully be joining my bag in the near future. Thank you Chelsy, Larissa, & Charlie for being so willing to spend the afternoon with us. Some of the below images were taken with the mark ii & others with the mark iii – switching between the two cameras was a good way to test out the new cameras capabilities (and differences!) Enjoy the glimpse of what I got to capture on this night of feeling inspired & shooting for the love of photographing. Enjoy <3

I am SO excited to finally reveal these images! We took these a few months ago as Brittany has been in the process of recording an EP album and wanted some images to go along with the launch of her music. Have you been to the portfolio website lately? The first song is Brittany – and it’s a special song that she personally wrote! I feel really honored to be able to feature such a unique and beautiful song on my website. Doesn’t she have an amazing voice? Oh and equally as epic, if you look below, there is a sound file where you can LISTEN to one of her brand new written/recorded songs from her EP! This is extra special and I’m BEYOND ecstatic to be able to premier it right here on the blog! And I will of course let you guys know when the launch of her CD comes out on itunes. It’s a must buy. I will never forget the afternoon sitting in the dining room of their house – Brittany picked up her guitar and played me two songs. I became so overwhelmed with emotion at the beauty of the words and her voice that I started to tear up and cry! Not only does she have a special voice, but a heart as pure as gold and the strongest love for Jesus and helping others (especially kiddos) I’ve ever seen. Brittany is one of my dear dear friends — I feel like part of their family (sisters!!!) and I miss them terribly since moving out of the Virginia Beach area. I could speak volumes about how much I love this girl, but I’ll let you enjoy the beautiful music and images of this special individual (isn’t she gorgeous?). This portrait session was SO fun and laid back. We walked around Ghent (Norfolk, Virginia) and found creativity in fun spaces! I had SUCH a hard time narrowing them down — eek!! Enjoy!!

Larissa ~ Portraits

This post is special, because it features my “little” sister! Time sure does fly, as you can see she’s not so little anymore! One of my favorite parts of moving to Charlotte North Carolina is the fact that both my sisters are in the same city! It’s fun being able to call them up and meet for a mid-afternoon stroll through the park, like we did for this portrait session. I don’t know about your area, but here in Charlotte, this winter has felt more like late spring! For reals, today is 70 degrees! Larissa and I decided to enjoy the “spring” like sunshine and walk around the park near her house. As I’ve mentioned, shooting for fun is so important to grow as an artist, especially being able to shoot in different lighting conditions. On this particular day, the sun was SUPER bright (not a cloud to be found) and we took our walk shortly after noon. It was fun being able to practice and find areas in the park that could work with the natural lighting conditions that we had that day. Plus, now Lariss and my family have some updated pics! Think of it as “Almost A Year Since College Graduation Pics” lol As I said wow, time flys! Thanks for being willing to stand on the other side of my lens and climb through some weeds for me! Even though your growing into a mature and beauuuutiful adult, you’ll always be my little sis (Love ya!) Enjoy <3

Stephen Lum ~ Portraits

Photographers should always continue learning, growing their craft, and shoot for fun. Yes, I said it, shoot for the fun of it! It is in these moments where we can once again find ourselves as an artist. I was smitten when Stephen agreed to be my subject for the weekend! For a few reasons – a) I don’t normally do portraits of guys – I would love to (come on dudes, where u at?) but haven’t really had the opportunity to do one-on-one portrait sessions with any males! So it’s awesome learning experience! b) Normally I’ve had to work with a range of different heights when working with couples. It’s fun to get a whole variety of different poses based on the varying heights when shooting couples. With portraits, you have one subject, so you have to work with your surroundings instead of another person. Oh and did I mention, Stephen is 6’8? Ummm, never have I ever photographed anyone this tall! I’ve known Stephen for a good amount of time, but not until I had a camera in my hands did I really have to think about how height plays a factor in portraits. c) I learned this lesson from Lindsay Adler (fashion photog!) you need to go out and do shoots for fun to continue learning, be inspired, grow your portfolio, and think like a photographer. Many photographers will tell you, some of their favorite portfolio images have come out of sessions that were for fun. So thank you Stephen for allowing me to capture you - for being such a calm soul, and singing/playing me songs along the way (he even writes his own – see video below!). As I mentioned, I’m continuing to grow my craft, so I tried different editing techniques to go along with the vintage feel of the shoot. What do u think?
